This set of photographs was made whilst visiting the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival. A large area of the business district had been re-developed to a master plan by Terry Farrell that includes his own Edinburgh Conference Centre design. The main Exchange Plaza entrance fronts Lothian Road.A corner perspective showing the floors above that entrance, the curved corner glazing and a section of the drum structure above. The massing of forms and the grey colour of the aluminium cladding prompted this monochrome set as an alternative to the original colour images.I wanted to place a strong perpendicular strip to the left to set against the serrated diagonal of the roof profile outlined against the cloud textured sky.The block forms at the top of the entrance tower are orchestrated below the circular drum and canopy crowning the entrance tower. The grey upper cladding is in marked contrast to the brick, sandstone, granite and colour featured elsewhere in the building.I sought to record the intersecting arcs and the detail they contained as set against the cladding gridlines and the clear dark sky beyond.This structure is one of three projecting from the long northern façade as it follows the curve of the North Approach Road.The long crescent form of the main building fronts the highway to the north and accommodates the Sheraton Hotel within its inner curve to the south.For a short distance into the Plaza from Lothian Road, a glazed canopy on the southern façade offers some protection from inclement weather.Showing the curves within the canopy relating to that of the façade of the building itself.Something of the style and the materials employed in the design are evident here.Looking back, this composition shows two of the three projecting structures on the inner curve of the south façade facing the Sheraton Hotel.A circular tower acts as a full stop to the western end of the main structure and is within yards of the Edinburgh International Conference Centre featured in the remain images.These six photographs show details from the entrance fronting Morrison Street. The building itself is circular in plan. Here, framing the reverse curves on the canopy and their relationship to the curves in the projecting roof of the building drum seemed appropriate.I sought a composition of curving elements set against the blue sky.The inter-relation of curves set against perspectives of the straight structural elements attracted.The complex forms of metal structure and taut fabric come together to shelter visitors alighting beneath.Reflections in the façade glazing added an incidental element to the design.A slight change of camera placement brings more of the reflections into the composition.
